Thales Awarded F22 HMD DIUX Dev Contract

TDSI has been awarded an initial $1.6 million Other Transaction Authority (OTA) contract for integration and development testing of F-22 specific upgrades for its Scorpion® Helmet Mounted Display (HMD). The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) under its Raptor Open System Tactical-Helmet Display (ROST-HD) program, in partnership with the National Guard Bureau, is working with the U.S. Air Force advancing technology to provide F-22 pilots with state-of-the-art HMD capability. The Scorpion ® HMD allows pilots to receive situational awareness (SA) information and display it to the pilot while also maintaining visual awareness of their surroundings. TDSI has been a leader in providing advanced HMD technology across fixed and rotary wing platforms through the Scorpion® system.

TDSI will work with government and industry partners including DIU, F-22 System Program Office, ACC Federal Lab, the U.S. Air Force’s 309th SWEG (Software Engineering Group) and Lockheed Martin IFG (Integrated Fighter Group), to create an HMD based Pilot/Vehicle Interface (PVI), as it does not currently have HMD capability. The HMD based PVI will allow the F-22 pilot to view symbology and interact with F-22 mission systems through the HMD. This development will take advantage of Scorpion’s advanced design and Raptor’s Open System Architecture, giving it truly unrivaled air superiority capabilities. TDSI, Visionix of Aurora, Illinois, will provide initial Scorpion® HMD hardware within 90 days to support Systems Integration Lab (SIL) development as well as cockpit installation definition.

Already popular with pilots and maintainers, Scorpion® is fielding across Air Force, Air Reserve and Air Guard fighter wings.

“It’s highly customizable allowing each platform to maximize capabilities to its unique system architecture. Partnered with DIU we are proud to advance HMD Technology and assist the U.S. Air Force in achieving an advanced HMD solution for F-22 pilots.”

Jim Geraghty Vice President, Visionix

The modular architecture of Scorpion® enables low cost technology insertion to ensure it remains optimized for the evolving fighter aircraft environment. It provides enhanced SA with full color symbology and a single display for both day and night operations at a substantially reduced life cycle cost.
