Single Channel Handheld Radio
Small Form Factor Tactical Communications

The AN/PRC-148E is a combat-proven handheld radio that is the smallest, lightest, tactical handheld radio covering the 30–512 MHz frequency range. The software defined radio supports a wide variety of tactical Line of Site and SATCOM waveforms providing interoperability with a full range of legacy tactical radios. The suite of waveforms available on the AN/PRC-148E is the result of over 15 years of waveform and software development and its programmable cryptography supports the requirements of the National Security Agency’s (NSA) Crypto Modernization program. The AN/PRC-148E Spear features simple to use human machine interface—minimize training requirements, enables rapid fielding, and provide the reliability that warfighters have trusted for many years.

Key Features / Operational Advantages:

  • Smallest/lightest form factor crypto modernization compliant single channel 30–512 radio and operationally used across the highest tier of DoD and civilian tactical units.
  • Incorporates L-Band SATCOM (LTAC) into the same small form factor providing users with an alternative commercial SATCOM capability when traditional military SATCOM links are not available.
  • Supports a Radio over IP (RoIP) mode when connected with MANET radios operationally used across DoD and civilian agencies providing users the ability to seamlessly  transport data across the area of operation.
  • Enhanced keypad and Over The Air Cloning (OTAC) allows for rapid configuration changes in a tactical environment further improving a field proven easy to operate user experience.
  • Maintains existing menu structures that have been widely used throughout the DoD reducing training time and costs.
  • Interoperable with all legacy single channel and next generation two channel 30–512 radios from Thales and other radio vendors.
  • Compatible with DISA’s non-proprietary PDA-184 to send data via BLOS transmission allowing users to send data over legacy SATCOM channels.
  • Delivered with a small 3-cell battery that still provide 6.5 hours of operation. In addition, compatible with existing, fielded 6-cell batteries for extended operating time of 13 hours.
